Ride and Run for a Cause: Eric’s Epic Adventure for Make-A-Wish Colorado
Dear Friends and Supporters,
I am embarking on a personal challenge that combines my passion for backcountry endurance mountain biking and trail running with a cause that is close to my heart. In August (date TBD),
Because of torrential rain, lightning and mud slides in the San Juans, I had to go to plan B and choose a new route. My day 1 included riding Guanella pass, hiking Mt. Bierstadt and riding Argentine pass. Day 2 TBD.
I will embark on a grueling 120-mile mountain bike ride and climb two 14,000 foot peaks through some of the most challenging and beautiful terrain in the San Juans.
This isn't just an adventure for adventure's sake. I am dedicating this journey to support Make-A-Wish Colorado, an organization that I have been involved with for years and have a deep connection to. Their work in bringing hope and joy to children and their families has inspired me to push my limits and raise awareness and funds to support their incredible efforts.
The Challenge
The route I have chosen is not for the faint-hearted. It involves steep relentless climbs and descents, high altitude, and demanding conditions that will test my endurance and determination. I have been training for months (arguably years), recovering from injuries, and every mile I ride and run will be driven by the knowledge that each step brings me closer to making a difference.
The Route
This route is classically called the ‘Alpine Loop’ and is most often traversed with a Jeep or other 4x4 vehicle.
My journey will start by mountain bike in one of my favorite places, Telluride, CO. From there, I will climb Black Bear Pass at an altitude of 12,840 feet. After descending Black Bear Pass, I'll then take on the steep ascent up Engineer Pass, reaching 12,800 feet, before descending into the town of Lake City.
Near Lake City, I will transition from biking to trail running as I set out to summit Redcloud Peak (14,034 feet) and Sunshine Peak (14,001 feet) the following morning. After these challenging treks, I’ll get back on my bike and head over Cinnamon Pass (12,620 feet) into Silverton to refuel. Finally, I’ll tackle the ascent of Ophir Pass (11,814 feet) before returning to Telluride for some well-deserved food and recovery at the Telluride Brewing Company..
